Volunteers help in many ways!

Who are the GCHS volunteers?

There are no "typical" volunteers.

They are  men and women of all ages and from
all walks of life, who volunteer for a
variety of reasons - to learn, to make
new friends, to share their love of history,
or just to devote time to a good cause.

But one thing is constant - a desire to
help preserve and interpret
Goodhue County history.

It's a fact!  We could not run without our fantastic volunteers, who accomplish an amazing number of jobs each month and have fun doing them too!
Here are just a few of the ways that you can spend your time volunteering at GCHS:
Tour Guide
Share your love and knowledge of Goodhue County history with students and adult visitors.  If you have an interest in history, can tell a good story, the ability to walk and stand for a 45 or 60 minute tour, and lots of enthusiasm, we'd love to utilize your talents!  Tour guides work on an on-call basis mostly during the Spring and Summer months.  Training provided.  Call Diane Buganski for more information at 651-388-6024.

Museum Guardians
Provide information for museum visitors and monitor the safety of exhibits and artifacts. Guardians should be friendly, helpful and willing to walk throughout the museum periodically on a shift. Most guardians commit to one Sunday afternoon from 1-5 a month.

Library Assistants
Lend your help to visitors in the library on Saturday's from 1-5.  Help the past come alive for the many individuals who are discovering their roots, or who are uncovering Goodhue County’s past.  Volunteers conduct research and assist the public with genealogy and local history research.  Orientation and training in the library resources is provided.

Newsletter Writers
Contribute to the Goodhue County Historical News by writing articles on particular topics about Goodhue County.  No experience required but an interest in history and good writing skills are a plus.  The writing can be done from your home.  We have many resources in our library and archives to supplement your story.

Special Project - Library
A volunteer/intern is needed  to assign call numbers to the 1000+ books in the Library.  Library of Congress numbering experience is desired. This is a long term project, and can be completed by subsequent volunteers.  The hours are flexible, including weekends.

Oral History Interviewers and Transcribers
Meet with interesting people who have a special knowledge of county history and assist them in telling their stories on audio or video tape. Volunteers conduct interviews and/or transcribe tapes in order to provide a written record.  Listening, writing, and verbal skills are needed. Hours are flexible.

Resource speakers
Communicate and preserve county history by passing on stories and historical information to county groups and organizations, using personal stories or resources of the Society. Good verbal and communication skills are needed. Teachers, nursing homes, clubs and organizations contact us for speakers to attend classes or meetings. Times vary.

Special Program Volunteers
Help with the many programs offered by GCHS  including quarterly open houses, helping at booths at county-wide evenets, bus tours, and many more. Volunteers are needed to help organize, do mailings, bake cookies, decorate, etc. Creativity, good organization and communication skills, and enthusiasm a plus.

D.A.S.H. is an educational program that require many volunteers. Volunteers are needed to lead history stations, prepare materials, or help with children's activities. This is a good way to begin volunteering at the museum because it requires only a one time commitment.
