The people of Goodhue County, Minnesota, have stories to tell, and native son, Frederick L. Johnson weaves them into a readable, informative, entertaining account. His rich narrative recounts the colorful history of one of Minnesota' earliest counties and considers the trends important to its people - often in the words of those who lived it. The stories of the county's more famous, or infamous, sons and daughteres enrich the strong fabric of Johnson's narrative. Here you will learn of the preeminent Mdewakanton war leader Tatankamni (Red Wing), of Vasa immigrant's first experience with mosquitoes, of Cannon Falls settlers subverting claims regulations, and of the rise and fall of King Wheat. Fred Johnson has taken care to consider the lives of ordinary citizens who, "possessed with a faith in their ability and a willingness to work, proved to be the true architects and construction crews - the real builders of Goodhue County." |
Uncertain Lives: African Americans and Their First 150 Years in the Red Wing, Minnesota Area |
"The first African
Americans to arrive in Red Wing after the Civil War came with goals
identical to those held by immigrants of other races and cultures. They
hoped to build successful lives in the vibrant Minnesota frontier
village, " Johnson remarks in his book.
How black newcomers were assimilated into the Red Wing area's dominant white culture over the ensuing 150 years is an important Minnesota and American Story that Johnson's narrative thoroughly documents. Published
by GCHS in 2005. |
